Electric toothbrushes clean teeth much more thoroughly than manual ones – at least, that's what electric toothbrush manufacturers claim. Professor Dr. Ulrich Schiffner from the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. With a manual toothbrush, you can achieve the same result as with an electric toothbrush. However, only with the correct cleaning technique. And that is precisely what is often a problem in practice. Many people brush their teeth incorrectly, too infrequently, and for too short a time for optimal oral hygiene. Electric toothbrushes can help here, perhaps simply because they motivate you to maintain your daily routine. But which model is best for cleaning? This is shown by a comparison of eight electric toothbrushes.
Rotating or sonic
Almost every second German (45 percent) brushes their teeth with an electric toothbrush, and almost half (49 percent) of them use a Braun Oral-B device. Thus, three Oral-B models appear in the test field – bestsellers in their price ranges. All tested Oral-B toothbrushes use so-called oscillating-rotating technology and have round brush heads. The round heads of rotating toothbrushes perform several movements simultaneously: they pulsate, thus gently tapping the tooth to loosen plaque. In addition, they rotate 45 degrees in each direction and oscillate back and forth approximately 4400 times per minute to sweep away loosened plaque. With an electric rotating toothbrush, no rapid movements are required, as with a manual toothbrush.
The newest and most expensive Oral-B iO model is powered by a newly developed magnetic motor that produces a vibration effect similar to a sonic toothbrush, but does not rattle like a traditional mechanically driven rotating brush. All other test candidates are sonic toothbrushes with elongated brush heads. Sonic toothbrush heads move much faster than rotating brush heads. They create up to 40,000 oscillations per minute with a characteristic buzzing sound. During brushing, the electric toothbrush is slowly guided over the teeth with light pressure. Intensive cleaning movements, as with a simple manual toothbrush, are not required due to the vibrations that do most of the work. The task of the brush is to clean the entire interior, reach the outer and chewing surfaces, as well as the spaces between them.

Round or oblong
During the test, no sharp differences in cleaning effectiveness were found. With the correct cleaning technique, at least a good cleaning effect can be achieved with all brushes. Round cleaning heads clean individual teeth better, while elongated cleaning heads clean a larger area simultaneously. Therefore, the optimal cleaning movements differ slightly.
Hard-to-reach places, such as the back molars, can hardly be perfectly cleaned with either brush head shape. Testers also had minor issues with the Oral-B iO brush head, whose shaft widens significantly towards the bottom. If you clean the side surfaces particularly far back, you will then use it to scrape the lips of the closed mouth. This is somewhat uncomfortable and may prevent sensitive individuals from adequately cleaning that area. If you part your lips further, you risk getting unsightly white toothpaste-like water splashes on the bathroom mirror.
